The world’s most famous television host finished the 1994 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, in 4 hours, 29 minutes 20 seconds.
Eight years before Winfrey ran this race, she challenged herself to run and finish a marathon before her 40th birthday. Her bib number was 40 to match her age. After finishing the race, Winfrey said, “This is better than an Emmy.”
Winfrey trained for 20 weeks leading up to the race with her trainer Bob Greene. He ran alongside her, along with two paparazzi who ran the entire route to get exclusive images of Winfrey.
There are reports claiming that Winfrey lost 72 pounds in the training process.
While talking about her struggle following the race, she wrote on her website, ‘ll never forget the morning in 1995—just a year after I’d run a marathon—when I found myself barely able to drag my legs, which felt like concrete blocks, around an indoor track for a five-mile run. Huffing and puffing at lap seven with 15 to go, I stopped my trainer, Bob Greene, who was running his usual three paces ahead of me: “Why does every step have to be so difficult for me?” I asked him.”
Without missing a beat, Bob met my question with another: “Why do you look at it as a struggle? This is going to be harder some days than others, but on any given day, your body gives you what it has—and you just have to do the best you can with that.”
