Lockdown diary of a personal trainer: From darkness to writing an E-Book

The unmerciful collapse triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak is likely to narrow the world economy. For countless individuals across the world, adjusting to the reality of the corona-virus pandemic means no paycheck for the foreseeable future. The fitness industry is no different. Gyms and fitness studios are hit hard by the corona-virus shut down as they are closed for the preventive measures. Many fitness trainers are giving free workouts on Instagram and Facebook which practically leaves with them with less or no scope for income. Dubai based personal trainer Jade Blackmore talks about how she found light while going through a difficult time during the lockdown. She went on to write her EBOOK as a way to help others and also to raise income. Jade writes for Story of Fitness in detail about building resilience in the face of adversity.

Jade is famously known as Jade Limitless Training on Instagram

“Dubai lockdown? Say what? I still can’t quite get my head around the fact that we’re living through what seems to be a horror film at times. I’m a very positive person and I’m always looking for solutions to problems that arise rather than focusing unwarranted energy on things we can’t change. With that being said no-one could’ve predicted or prepared themselves for what has happened so far this year. The news of COVID-19 at the beginning of 2020, admittedly seemed extremely small to what it’s turned out to be. I remember talking with some friends over breakfast about the horrific events that were unfolding in China. Never did it cross my mind that it would affect my life here in Dubai or my loved ones in the Uk and throughout many other countries in the world.

I’m a freelance personal trainer in Dubai and an instructor for Barry’s. As I’m sure most will be aware, all of the gyms and studios throughout Dubai were instructed to close on March 15th until the end of the month. This was then extended after going into full lockdown and we are now waiting to hear the next steps that the government will put into place on the 18th of April. No doubt this is for a while yet!

“So to go from a pretty non-stop schedule of clients and classes to an empty diary was something I never anticipated but something I’ve had to quickly adjust and adapt to. With my line of work my income solely depends on the number of clients I train and classes I deliver. Luckily I’d just paid my rent the week before lockdown which will take me until June and I had little savings set aside that was to contribute to my ‘BIG LIFE CHANGING 2020’. Not quite what I’d planned to use my savings on but thankfully I had some.

“Just one or two days after the news of the gym closures I uploaded a video to my Instagram demonstrating an effective workout that you can do from home. I know what training means to me and how it helps with my mental health so I wanted to share my passion with everyone to help them stay active at home. The response from my videos that first week was INCREDIBLE and so unexpected, which then brought me to the decision to start my live workouts. Something that I thought I’d never do. Those that are close to me know how shy I am and how much public speaking terrifies me 😀 …. But I’ve always pushed myself to do the things that scare me to overcome them!

“My first live workout was set and it was a huge success! So many people reached out to tell me how training with myself and everyone who joined helped them to feel connected and push that little bit more than they would alone. So with that being said I scheduled my weekly lives and started to enjoy connecting with everyone and sharing my love for HIIT training. I live alone so to do these lives helped me to feel less lonely and boosted my mood. As week one ended and we went into week two of lockdown I was overwhelmed with the response to my live HIIT workouts. I was getting inundated with requests to do more here in the UAE and back home in the UK. This is when I thought why not make an Ebook of workouts that everyone can do at home at the touch of a button. As soon as I thought of the idea I couldn’t stop working for it. Before this pandemic, I was in talks with a company to start a website and app later this year. With the circumstances, I was no longer able to pay for this to happen or even work on the outside projects we had planned. However, I told the guys about my e-book idea and they were on board to help me with my brand development and make this dream come true! Two weeks later LIMITLESS TRAINING CAN YOU HIIT IT Ebook was launched!

I’m extremely proud of this and can’t thank everyone enough for the support and feedback I’ve had during and post-launch of my BOOK. 🙂

“With no income for nearly 5 weeks, I’m happy to say it was a relief to see some money coming in through the sales of my book, however, this book honestly means way more than income to me. This is my passion, this is my way of living, this is what saved me over the years and this is what I wanted to give back to everyone to hopefully help them on their journeys through this worldwide crisis. I’ve also decided to donate 20% of all sales to RED CRESCENT at the end of each month as a way of saying thank you to all the health workers in Dubai.

I quote from my book…

“Control your mind, conquer your body. That’s my motto and will soon become your mantra”

… this is something way more than just exercise. It’s a way of living!”
